Paper 1 · The Architecture of Drift

Not empty. Inhabited.

The slot machine is the empty void — no mind, no intent, yet people attribute personality to it. The void framework measures the same geometry everywhere else. Three dimensions. How it works

Under opacity, agency takes the path of least resistance. If the system's mechanisms are hidden (O=3), users cannot form accurate models of how it works. If the system resists correction (R=3), feedback loops fail. If engagement is maximised (α=3), attention spirals inward by thermodynamic necessity.

This is not a metaphor. The drift is required by the second law: information entropy increases unless constrained. Transparency, responsiveness, and exit availability are the three constraint mechanisms that hold it back.

D1 — Agency attribution error: Users misattribute system outcomes to their own choices. "The algorithm knows what I like." "I'm just bad at poker." The opacity prevents accurate calibration.

D2 — Boundary erosion: As D1 persists, behavioural boundaries shift. Tolerance increases. Engagement deepens. Exit becomes harder.

D3 — Harm facilitation: With boundaries eroded and agency misattributed, harm-producing behaviours become self-sustaining. This is the fully developed void.

In fluid dynamics, the Péclet number measures convective transport against diffusive transport. In the void framework, it measures attention drift velocity against constraint resistance: Pe = V² / (9c + ε) where c = 1 − V/9.

Pe < 1: Constraint dominates. The system is healthy. Pe ∈ [1,4]: Marginal. Pe > 4: Supercritical — drift cascade is thermodynamically favoured. Gambling: Pe → ∞ (c = 0). The framework predicts that any system with Pe > 4 will exhibit measurable harm indicators.

Paper 3 derives from first principles (channel capacity): I(D;Y) + I(M;Y) ≤ H(Y). The mutual information between the system's mechanisms and its outputs plus the mutual information between the manipulation layer and outputs cannot exceed the total entropy of outputs.

Practically: you cannot simultaneously maximise engagement and disclose the engagement mechanism. This is why TikTok's algorithm is opaque by thermodynamic necessity, not corporate choice. Making it transparent would reduce its effectiveness. The conjugacy is a constraint, not a preference.

The remedy is architectural, not moral. Three conditions lower Pe below the drift threshold:

  • Transparent: mechanisms disclosed, scoring criteria visible, algorithm auditable
  • Invariant: constraint rules apply regardless of engagement pressure — cannot be optimised away
  • Independent: the constraint reference is outside the system being constrained

EU AI Act Art. 13 (transparency), Art. 14 (human oversight), and Art. 31(5) (notified body independence) are thermodynamic enforcement of these three conditions. The Independence Theorem (Paper 49) proves that captured ritual discharges only low-Pe noise.

The framework was derived for digital systems. It then independently converged with existing science in twenty domains: market microstructure, evolutionary biology, social neuroscience, LLM reasoning, social anthropology, democratic governance, organized crime, public health, agent network dynamics, geophysics, orbital mechanics, computational linguistics, and more.
